How To Sell Online For Free

How To Sell Online For Free

Most of the time, when people are looking to sell something it is to make money. There are a lot of different ways to do this, so when it comes to find the best option to sell online for free it may become confusing. In this post, I will give you a quick view of the most famous online marketplace to sell your own product and a few basics tips to list your product.

But the first thing to know is that there are many selling platform online and all of them want to make money in a way or another. So when looking for a way to sell anything online for free, you will come across some kind of fees. Now, if you are not interested in starting a real business with an online store but just want to sell a few products, the online marketplace is a good option.

Amazon

Website: www.amazon.com

It is one of the biggest online marketplaces in the world. The good thing with Amazon is its notoriety around the world and the incredible amount of traffic. Here, the categories for product are extremely broad and you can list almost anything.

If you list your item there, it will get a very good recognition almost as good as a product being sold directly by Amazon. You may not even need to take a picture of it or add a description, if the product is part of the catalog from amazon, it will be listed with it.

Fees for the Individual Selling Plan:

  • listing is free
  • $0.99 per item + referral fees and variable closing fees

The fees are reasonable and only if you manage to sell your item, which makes it a good place to list it. If you don’t sell it, you don’t pay anything. Now, if you are selling more than 40 items a month, they have the Professional Selling Plan for $39.99 a month, but you don’t have to pay the extra $0.99 per item sold.

eBay

Website: www.ebay.com

The same here, eBay is well-known around the world and the traffic that goes to this website is amazing. It differs in the sense that eBay is more of an auction type platform, but if you want you can set a fixed price with the “Buy It Now” option. The best thing is that you can sell anything there. Your favorite pen or your old car, second hand or brand new, if it can be sold, it can go on eBay.

When you list your item on eBay, you will not have an “eBay recognition” kind of thing like with Amazon. Your product has to stand on its own. It is up to you to take your own pictures of it and write your own description. It is not that hard, so don’t rush those steps.

Fees:

  • listing is free, items stay listed for 10 days if using a fixed price
  • 10% of the final value

Again, the good point is that you don’t have to pay anything if you don’t sell your item. The bad point is that after a bid the buyer can take some time to make the payment. This can be very annoying if in the end you have to relist and try to resell your item. And finally, if you use a fixed price, you will have to relist your item every 10 days.

Etsy

Website: www.etsy.com

Etsy is also one of the most renown marketplace around but is more oriented towards crafts, arts or hand-made articles. It is one of the best places if you want to sell some art or craft of your own and doesn’t have this “shop” feeling like Amazon or the “Auction” one like eBay.

Here when you list your item it is most likely to be unique, so make sure to describe it the best you can so the buyer know what to expect. Again, you will have to take your own pictures and make your own description but the good point is that you know what you are talking about because you created it.

Fees:

  • listing is $0.20 per item for four month
  • 3.5 % Transaction Fee
  • 4 % + $0.50 Payment Processing

Here, you will have to pay a fee to list your item for four months. It is quite low so still fine I think and you don’t have to worry about relisting it too often, also all the fees adding up are still lower than eBay. The “crafting – handmade” nature of Etsy makes it the best choice for this kind of product because this is the place where customers who are looking for those kinds of items go.

Conclusion – Which place is the best for you?

In the end, it mostly comes to what you are trying to sell.

Amazon is a great marketplace if you want to sell more regular stuff, like books, movies or electronics. I would say that if you ask: can I find this item in a regular electronic/book store? And the answer is yes, then Amazon is probably the place to go (this is just an example but I hope it will help you get the idea).

For more specific products or maybe even second hand items, I would recommend eBay. It is really a place where you can sell anything.

But if it ends on the craft or handmade items, I would definitively recommend Etsy because this platform is really specialized in this domain.

Simple But Important Advices!

Those are all personal advices based on what I am looking for when I go around those websites.

DON’T RUSH! When you list an item, you should take few minutes to take some nice pictures and write a description. When I look for a product, I tend to click on the nice picture, the one that look like the owner actually care about it.

About the picture

Remember that you are trying to sell your items. You don’t need to be a photographer to take a good picture. Just take one more minute to place it on a flat surface, and center your item in the picture. You can put some white paper under it to hide the table or the ground. It is nothing special but a nice video game box centered and in focus (yes, some are not even in focus…) have more chances to be looked at than a blurry one that stand in a corner of the picture.

For example: if I want to sell a video game and it is in:

  • Brand new condition and sealed, I will just take a picture of the front and back of the box to show that everything is in order.
  • Band new condition but not sealed, I will take some extra pictures of the content to show that everything is in perfect condition. (Personally, I never buy a brand new unsealed item with just the picture of the box, I need to see that the disc or anything in it is in perfect – brand new condition).
  • Second hand condition, I will take pictures of the box, the content and add some closer look pictures of all major scratches or damages to make sure that the customer knows what to expect. Be honest, no bad surprises.

About the description

Again, take some time to show that you care. If it is brand new well it is easy, just specified in two lines if it is still sealed (you may have to list the item in a different category if not) and if not redirect to the extra pictures you have taken.

Now, if the item is second hand, you should take more time to describe the potential damage that it may have. For example, I will point out the big scratch on the box and also redirect to the extra pictures. You don’t really need to list all the minor damages, the pictures will do a better job, but you should show that you are honest and at least point out the bigger ones.

Be nice with the customer

This may sound obvious but some sellers forget that… Some customers may ask one more picture if they want to see a specific detail of the product, especially if it is second hand. They may also have concern about how the item will be packaged. Remember that they don’t ask this to bother you but to get more information, which may be a good sign that they are interested in buying it!
